I love food, whether it’s homemade or takeaway. But there is a sense of satisfaction to homemade food that you can’t replicate. Young adults and students are relying more on food delivery services and the act of passing on home recipes seems to be slipping during the modern age as people cook less or are exposed to social media food hacks which are often fake and taste terrible.

Maybe something can be done to help the younger generation learn to cook with more enthusiasm and feel rewarded.

Brainstorming and Research

As always the process begins with some background research. I looked into what other products could solve the issue, why do the users have the problem and where can we snuff out these pain points? Field reviews really offer a lot of insight. So I dug into the food delivery services such as Menulog and also Hello Fresh, which offers meal kits on a plan.

Insights and Pivoting

After insights were gained from the research I mapped out some ideas and user story mapped how these would potentially work. For the young generation of adults I thought it would be important to use some sort of social media and gamified aspects for the app.

The brand was originally named Capt. Cook as a theme of pirates discovering the treasure of cooking. However the name was changed to Cooky and a more friendly cartoonish vibe was used due to similarities with the real life explorer.

User tests revealed some key features that would make it into the final product. Most prominent was the step by step process which allowed new cooks to feel more guided. The other is a reward system allowing users to earn customisable avatars as reward for progressing.
